The glowing grotesque art of Hattcherry
Hattchery describes himself as an artist who works in the medium of "cuteness". That does not tell the entire story of his candy-coated, nightmarish illustrations.
The work of Hattchery may draw on a bubbly aesthetic. With its bold, almost-fluorescent block colours and clear definition, there's a certain ostentatious charm to his vibrant drawings.
The content of them is an entirely different matter.
Hattchery draws nightmarish reimaginings of his everyday interactions as a human living among humans. Banal situations such as holding a balloon or eating a hot dog/ice cream/donut (eating is a common theme in Hattchery's work) become hyper-grotesque benzo trips.
These monstrous characters begin as "clumsy and weird" sketches that start to take a life of their own. The creatures he creates long to be human and imitate human actions such as work or eating. "Sometimes they even bring parts of the human body and act as if they're their own," Hattchery tells us.
Dark humour is an important part of Hattchery’s work and his malformed critters are intended to be as amusing as they are alarming.
Hattchery's art is an unsettling mixture of extreme cuteness and surrealist macabre. The artist creates a world of characters as visually appealing as it is dark and disturbing.
