Best 100 Korean songs of 2023
2023 was a weird year. Every year is a weird year; yes, this is true. But 2023 had an especially weird feeling to it. Things are now back to where we were before you know what, but everything feels the same, but different.
This is also kind of true for the Korean indie music scene. Lots of really great music came out this year, particularly in the second half of the year. There was also a strong feeling of the music community finding its feet. 2023 was a year in which we got some great returns - both in terms of artists who we'd assumed had packed it and sounds that make up the backbone of Korean alternative. So get ready for lots of shoegaze, pop-rock, shoegaze, R'n'B-inspired indie, and, of course, shoegaze, as we go through our top 100 songs of this year.
First, a few housekeeping notes:
First, this was REALLY hard to put together. Our shortlist was about 200 tracks long, and there were a few difficult decisions to make. Quite a few musicians created excellent music, but we had to draw the line somewhere.
Also, yes, we're aware that a couple of these songs came out in 2021. We published our last list at the start of December, so there were a few songs we missed that we wanted to include.
